E-mail/Letter Received Regarding the Restoration of the RCN
To the Oshawa Naval Veterans Club
To whom it may concern,
As you may be aware, the Senate of Canada has passed a motion encouraging the government to officially change the name of Maritime Command to a name that includes the word "Navy". This was the result of a compromise reached between Senators who prefer the new name "Canadian Navy" and those that prefer its traditional designation, the Royal Canadian Navy. The government will now decide over the next several weeks whether to rebrand our navy as C.N. (like the railway) or return it to R.C.N. (like the proud navy we once knew).
However, before the government makes any official decision on the matter, it wants to know the position of our loyal veterans and ex-naval personnel, and so I have been tasked by the powers-at-be to ascertain from veteran groups and ex-service associations whether there remains an appetite to restore the Royal designation to the Canadian navy (and by consequence) the Canadian air force.
As you will no doubt appreciate, the Prime Minister is favourably disposed to resuming usage of the navy's historical name, however because the Department of National Defence is leaning the other way, it is imperative to know where our veterans stand on this issue at the grassroots level.
To that end, could you please let me know at your earliest convenience if we have your support and that of the Oshawa Naval Veteran's Club.
Thank you very much indeed for your attention to this important matter.
With all kind regards,
Michael J. Smith
